Between Pulse & Echo

The Batter Island Distant Early Warning station, BAR Main, lies precariously between the past and the future. The station, frozen in time since closing in 1963, sits idle clutching the paranoia of the cold war. The DEW station is perched between past and future, north and south and ground and sky the DEW station sit quietly watching and waiting.

The project presents data as agitation to the visitor through the use of projection screens. To the southern ground the project uses surveillance technology to track oil drilling operations in Area 1002 through infrared, radar, satellite and seismic technologies. To the Northern sky, the project presents the cold war to the visitor by showing the spaces of military operation, frozen in time for decades. Both wars meet at what is the metaphorical ground zero for the DEW Station, the geodesic radome structure which is the metaphor for the duality that exists between pulse and echo.
